Plant Details
Published chill-hour estimates vary slightly by source. Mississippi State University and Alabama Extension list La Feliciana at approximately 550 chill hours, while some nursery references list it closer to 400–500 hours.
Fruit and Flavor
La Feliciana produces medium-to-large peaches with yellow skin covered by an attractive red blush. Its yellow flesh is firm, juicy and melting, with good traditional peach flavor.
The fruit is freestone when fully ripe, meaning the flesh separates easily from the pit. This makes La Feliciana especially useful for slicing, preserving, freezing and preparing homemade peach desserts.
The peaches are somewhat tender for long-distance shipping and are particularly well suited to home orchards, local sales, roadside markets and U-pick operations.
Pollination
La Feliciana is self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit without another peach variety nearby.
A second peach tree is not required for cross-pollination. However, bees and other pollinating insects can help improve pollination and overall fruit set.
Disease Resistance
La Feliciana has useful resistance to bacterial spot, an important advantage in warm, humid Southern climates. It has also been reported to have some resistance to brown rot.
Disease resistance does not mean the tree is immune. Good air circulation, annual pruning, orchard sanitation and timely preventive treatments may still be required to protect the tree and ripening fruit.
North Florida Growing Note
La Feliciana is a reasonable peach choice for the colder, inland areas of the Florida Panhandle. Its estimated requirement of approximately 500–550 chill hours is better matched to the DeFuniak Springs area than very high-chill peaches such as Elberta or Hale Haven.
Production may still vary from year to year. A particularly mild winter may not provide enough chilling, while an early warm period followed by a late freeze can damage flowers and developing fruit.
Plant La Feliciana in a sunny, elevated location rather than a low area where cold air and water collect. Customers closer to the Gulf Coast may receive fewer chill hours and could have less consistent production.
Planting and Care
Plant La Feliciana in full sun where it will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.
Choose a location with excellent drainage. Peach trees do not tolerate standing water or continuously wet roots. Sandy North Florida soil is suitable when the tree receives regular water and proper nutrition.
Train the tree to an open-center or vase shape with three to four main scaffold branches. This allows sunlight and air to reach the center of the tree and makes harvesting and routine care easier.
Thin young peaches when they are approximately nickel-sized, leaving about 6–8 inches between fruit. Proper thinning improves fruit size, quality and flavor while reducing the risk of branches breaking under a heavy crop.
Prune annually because peach trees produce fruit primarily on wood grown during the previous season.
