Flordaqueen is an older Florida peach variety valued for its early-season harvest and adaptation to colder inland areas of the Florida Panhandle. The fruit is suitable for fresh eating, preserves, cobblers and other homemade desserts.
Plant Details
Fruit and Flavor
Flordaqueen produces round, smooth peaches with a good yellow ground color and a light red blush. The fruit remains a useful medium size even when the tree carries a heavy crop.
The flesh is yellow and moderately firm. Flordaqueen is a clingstone peach, meaning the flesh remains attached to the pit when the fruit is ripe.
The fruit has a mild peach flavor and may be enjoyed fresh or used for preserves, jam, cobblers, pies and other homemade desserts.
Pollination
Flordaqueen is generally self-fertile, so one tree can produce fruit without another peach variety nearby.
A second peach tree is not required for cross-pollination. However, bees and other pollinating insects can improve flower pollination and overall fruit set.
North Florida Growing Note
Flordaqueen was introduced as a peach for North Florida and requires approximately 550 chill hours.
Early trials reported good production at Quincy, Florida, but less dependable fruiting at Gainesville. This indicates that the variety is better suited to colder inland areas of the Florida Panhandle than warmer parts of North-Central Florida or locations closer to the Gulf Coast.
Flordaqueen may perform well around DeFuniak Springs during winters that provide sufficient chilling. Production may vary following unusually mild winters.
When a peach tree does not receive enough winter chill, it may develop leaves late, flower unevenly or produce a reduced crop. Customers in warmer locations may have more dependable results with lower-chill peaches such as Gulfcrimson, Flordaprince, Flordaking, TropicBeauty or TropicSweet.
Planting and Care
Plant Flordaqueen in full sun where it will receive at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day.
Choose a location with excellent drainage. Peach trees do not tolerate standing water or continuously wet roots. Avoid low areas where water collects after heavy rainfall.
Planting on a slightly elevated site can improve drainage and allow cold air to move away from the tree during late-winter freezes.
Train the tree to an open-center or vase shape with three to four main scaffold branches. This allows sunlight and air to reach the center of the tree and makes harvesting and routine care easier.
Thin young peaches when they are approximately nickel-sized, leaving about 6–8 inches between fruit. Proper thinning improves fruit size and quality while reducing the chance of branches breaking under a heavy crop.
Prune annually because peach trees produce fruit primarily on wood that grew during the previous season.
