Best Apple Trees for North Florida

Apple trees can be grown in North Florida when you choose the right low-chill varieties. Unlike northern apple trees that need long cold winters, the best apple trees for North Florida need fewer chill hours and are better suited for our mild Southern winters.

For the Florida Panhandle and North Florida, some of the best apple tree choices include Anna, Dorsett Golden, Ein Shemmer, Shell and TropicSweet. UF/IFAS recommends these  low-chill apple varieties for Florida, and they can help pollinate each other when planted together. Most apple trees need cross-pollination, so planting at least two compatible varieties gives you the best chance for fruit.

Low-chill apple trees usually do best in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. In North Florida, they are commonly planted during the dormant season, and fruit may ripen in late spring to early summer depending on the variety and the weather. UF/IFAS notes that Anna, Dorsett Golden,Ein SHemmer, Shell and TropicSweet often ripen around late May through June in Florida.
