Can grow to 125 feet tall with a spread of 30-40 feet wide. Grows in clay, sand, loam, acidic, slightly alkaline, well drained soils. Has a high drought and salt tolerances and is dependent on fire. When managed with fire- this tree can come out of the grass stage and grow a foot per growing spirt with up to 7 growing spirts a year. Needles are in fascicles of 3 and grow to 14 inches long. Pine cones growing to 12 in. Uses: reclamation, shade, naval store- turpentine, lumber, pine straw baskets. Home to the endangered Red Cockaded woodpecker. Fun Facts: fire dependent ecosystem- used to encompass 90 million acres- what’s left is 5 million acres. Largest continuous forest left in world is in Conecuh NF, Blackwater River State Forest and Eglin AFB. Can live 500 years- oldest stand Okaloosa Co- Rocky Bayou State Park- 285-315 years old.
