Sandy soil is common throughout North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. It drains quickly, can dry out fast, and often contains less organic matter than heavier soils. This collection features trees, shrubs, grasses, ground covers, and flowering plants that are better suited to growing in sandy, well-drained conditions.
These plants are good choices for sunny landscapes, coastal areas, open properties, and other locations where water moves quickly through the soil. Many become drought tolerant after their roots are established, although newly planted plants still need regular watering during their first growing season.
For the best results, choose plants that match the amount of sunlight and moisture in the planting area. Adding compost or other organic matter at planting can help sandy soil hold moisture, but avoid planting species that require excellent drainage in areas where water regularly stands.
Most plants and trees are available for local pickup at our nursery in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Limited shipping may be available for select smaller plants. Please contact us before ordering if shipping is needed.
