Here's a more detailed description of the Flatwood Plum (Prunus umbellata): This native plant is a valuable addition to any landscape, offering both beauty and bounty. It's known for its early spring blooms, providing a welcome display of color.

FLATWOOD PLUMS Appearance: These plums are typically smaller than the chickasaw variety, with a pleasing round to oval shape. The fruit itself is quite compact, measuring between .50 to 1 inch in size. The skin color can vary, transitioning from green to a vibrant purple when fully ripe, making them visually appealing.

Taste: The fruit offers a unique flavor profile. It has a delightful tartness with a subtle acidity, often described as a pleasant, slightly sweet-tart taste. This makes them a favorite for culinary uses.

Uses: Flatwood plums are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. They are commonly used for making jams, jellies, and pies, where their smaller size allows for whole fruit preserves. Beyond human consumption, these plums are a treasure for local wildlife. Seeds are a favorite food source for deer, squirrels, and various other animals, while the nectar attracts insects and the fruit, birds and mammals.

Optimal Growing Zones: This plum thrives in Zones 8A to 9B.
