Brogdon is a cold-tolerant avocado valued for its rich, creamy flesh and attractive purple fruit. The smooth, thin skin darkens from green to deep purple as the fruit matures. Its flavor and higher oil content are often compared to the popular Hass avocado.

Brogdon is one of the better avocado varieties to consider for protected locations in North Florida. However, avocado trees remain vulnerable to severe freezes, especially while young, and winter protection is strongly recommended in the Florida Panhandle.

North Florida Growing Note: Brogdon is among the more cold-tolerant avocados and established trees may survive temperatures in the low 20s under favorable conditions. This does not mean the leaves, flowers, fruit, or young branches will escape damage. The temperature’s duration, wind, tree age, health, and planting location all affect freeze injury.

Plant Brogdon in the warmest part of the landscape, preferably on the south or southeast side of a building with protection from north winds. Young trees need protection whenever freezing weather is expected. Growing avocados outdoors in Zone 8b remains an experiment, and fruit production cannot be guaranteed following severe winters.

Drainage Warning: Avocado trees are highly susceptible to root rot and should never be planted where water collects. On flat or questionable sites, plant the tree on a broad mound of native soil above the surrounding grade.

Grafted-Tree Note: A grafted Brogdon tree will produce the correct variety and can begin bearing much sooner than a seed-grown avocado. Do not allow shoots growing from below the graft to replace the named variety.
