For customers in North Florida and the Florida Panhandle, choosing the right avocado variety is especially important. Mexican and Mexican-hybrid avocado varieties are generally the most cold tolerant and are better choices for trial planting in colder parts of Florida than tropical West Indian types.

Even cold-hardy avocado varieties can suffer freeze damage, especially while young. For North Florida plantings, we recommend choosing the warmest, most protected location available, planting in full sun with excellent drainage, and providing freeze protection when severe cold is expected.

Avocados are classified as Type A or Type B based on their flowering pattern. A single avocado tree can produce fruit, but planting compatible A- and B-type varieties near each other can improve pollination and fruit production.

North Florida Growing Note:
Avocados should be considered a specialty fruit crop for the Florida Panhandle. Some cold-hardy Mexican and Mexican-hybrid varieties have considerably better cold tolerance than tropical avocado varieties, but no avocado should be considered completely freeze-proof in North Florida.

Young trees are especially vulnerable to cold. Plant in a sunny, protected location away from low areas where cold air settles.
