The Century Plant is a bold, architectural succulent known for its large rosette of blue-green leaves and dramatic Southwestern appearance. Despite its name, the Century Plant does not normally take 100 years to bloom. A mature plant generally flowers after many years, producing an impressive flower stalk that may reach 20 feet or taller. After flowering, the original rosette gradually dies, but established plants commonly produce offsets, often called “pups,” that continue growing around the parent plant.

Century Plants perform best in full sun and very well-drained soil. Once established, they are extremely drought tolerant and require very little care. They are especially useful in hot, dry areas where many traditional landscape plants struggle. Avoid planting them in areas that remain wet, since excessive moisture and poorly drained soil can cause root rot.

The leaves have sharp tips and toothed edges, so give this plant plenty of space away from sidewalks, play areas, doorways, and heavily traveled locations. It is well adapted to North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, the Gulf Coast, and other warm Southern landscapes. In colder parts of Zone 8, some protection may be helpful during severe or prolonged freezes.
