Firebush hamelia nodosa 

🌿 1. Hamelia nodosa

Also called: Redhead Firebush, Texas Firebush, or Red Shrubverbena 
Native to: Mexico, Texas, Southwest ( not native to Florida ) 
Cold hardiness: Zone 8b–11, a little more cold-tolerant than regular Firebush
Growth habit:

  • More upright and tighter than regular Hamelia

  • Mature size 4–6 ft, sometimes 7 ft

  • Leaves more thin and narrow

  • More woody and drought-hardy

  • Extremely tough for heat, dry soil, and poor conditions

Flowers:

  • Clusters of orange-red tubular blooms

  • Often more orangey than the bright red of H. patens

Best for:

  • Hot areas

  • Dry, sandy soils

  • More compact hedges
