VIRGINIA WILLOW 'Sweetspire' Itea virginica NATIVE Mound shaped, slender-branch, deciduous shrub with an an erect to spreading shrub with showy spikes of tiny white flowers that bloom in late winter through early summer. The flower are small and white and bloom in spires or tassels that   droop with the arching branches. The flowers open from the base to tip. It is semi-evergreen in the southern range. The leaves turn red to purple in fall and persist well into the winter. Virginia willow  occurs naturally in floodplain swamps, seepage slopes, stream and lake edges, and calcareous and mesic hammocks. The plant provides food and cover for wildlife.

Used as an understory ornamental and is good cover for wildlife. The nectar is good for insects and it attracts birds.
