Thompson Seedless Grape Vine

Thompson Seedless is a classic green table grape known for its sweet, mild flavor and seedless fruit. The light green grapes grow in attractive clusters and may develop a golden tint when fully ripe. They are excellent for fresh eating and are also one of the best-known varieties used for making raisins.

This vigorous bunch grape requires full sun, a strong trellis, good air circulation, and yearly pruning. Thompson Seedless is self-fertile, so a second grape variety is not required for pollination and fruit production.

Although Thompson Seedless is widely grown in dry, warm regions, it is not considered a dependable grape for North Florida. Our high humidity, frequent summer rainfall, fungal disease pressure, and risk of Pierce’s disease can make this variety difficult to maintain. It is best suited to experienced grape growers who understand that regular disease monitoring and preventive care may be needed.

Important Pruning Note

Thompson Seedless should be cane pruned rather than cut back to short two-bud spurs. Its most fruitful buds are located farther along the previous season’s canes. Incorrect pruning can remove most of the fruit-producing buds and result in little or no crop.

North Florida Growing Note

Thompson Seedless is not one of the bunch grape varieties developed or recommended for dependable production in Florida.

The vine may grow in North Florida, but successful fruit production can be difficult because Thompson Seedless is susceptible to Pierce’s disease and several fungal diseases. Plant it only in a sunny, open location with excellent air circulation and well-drained soil. Avoid low areas where moisture and humid air collect.

Customers wanting the most dependable grape vines for North Florida should consider muscadines or Florida-adapted, Pierce’s disease-resistant bunch grape varieties.
