Sweetgum tree, liquidambar styraciflua Also known as the “Redgum” or “Sapgum”, this tree can reach a height of 80’ to 150’ with a diameter of 3’ to 5’. The leaves are star shaped and display brilliant autumn colors. The tree has a straight stem and pyramidal crown. This is a southern bottom-land tree that occurs in moist, rich, alluvial soils. This species is second in production only to oaks among the hardwoods. The Sweetgum rivals most other trees for outstanding fall color. It a valuable commercial hardwood that is sold as ‘satin-walnut’; it is used to make veneer, furniture, interior trim, and woodenware. In Pioneer days, a gum was obtained by peeling and scraping the bark of the solid gum. This gum was used medicinally as well as for chewing gum. The gum in the Asian counterpart to this species is used in perfumes and medicines. The females will eventually develop the spiny burr-like fruit that is valuable for wildlife. It can tolerate wet feet.
