Spicebush (Lindera benzoin) essential to attract the Spicebush Swallowtail Butterfly. Spicebush is a single- or few-stemmed, deciduous shrub, 6-12 ft. tall, with glossy leaves and graceful, slender, light green branches. It is dioecious (separate male and female plants) so plant several if fruit is desired. Female plants in the fall carry half-inch-diameter berries that turn from green to red. Host to the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly! Grows 6-10′ tall x 6-10′ wide. Full sun to part shade. Valuable for wildlife food and habitat. This plant is highly sought after by native plant gardeners.
