Afganski is a cold tolerant pomegranate valued for its red, sweet tart fruit and ornamental orange red flowers. It can grow as a bushy shrub or be trained into a small tree.

Plant Details:

  • Plant Type: Deciduous fruiting shrub or small tree
  • Botanical Name: Punica granatum ‘Afganski’
  • Mature Size: Generally 6–12 feet tall as a shrub; size depends on pruning and growing conditions
  • Sun: Full sun
  • USDA Zones: Commonly listed for Zones 7–10; protect young plants during hard freezes
  • Chill Hours: No established cultivar-specific requirement
  • Bloom: Orange red flowers in spring and summer
  • Harvest: Fall; timing varies with weather and location
  • Fruit: Red pomegranates with juicy, sweet tart arils
  • Pollination: Self-pollinating; one plant can produce fruit
  • Soil & Water: Plant in well-drained soil. Water regularly while establishing and keep moisture reasonably consistent as fruit develops.
  • Landscape Uses: Home orchards, edible landscapes, sunny borders, and fruiting hedges

North Florida Growing Note: Give Afganski a sunny site with good air circulation. Florida’s hot, wet weather can increase fruit disease and splitting, so fruit quality may vary by season. Its reputation for cold tolerance does not guarantee freedom from freeze damage. ask.ifas.ufl.edu
