Pineapple Guava is an attractive evergreen fruiting shrub or small tree that is especially well suited to North Florida landscapes. Also known as Feijoa, it combines ornamental beauty with edible fruit, making it an excellent choice for home orchards, edible landscapes, hedges, privacy plantings, or as a small specimen tree.

The plant has handsome gray-green foliage with glossy green upper surfaces and silvery-white undersides. In spring, it produces striking flowers with white to pink petals and prominent red stamens. Even the flower petals are edible and have a pleasantly sweet, fruity flavor.

The oval green fruit develops through summer and generally ripens in fall. Ripe pineapple guava fruit has a fragrant, sweet-tart flavor often described as a combination of pineapple, guava, and other tropical fruits. The soft interior pulp can be scooped out and eaten fresh or used for preserves, desserts, drinks, and other recipes.

Pineapple Guava is much more cold tolerant than common tropical guava and is a particularly interesting fruiting plant for gardeners in the Florida Panhandle. It can also be maintained as a shrub or hedge or trained into a small multi-stemmed or single-trunk tree.

North Florida Growing Note:
Pineapple Guava is one of the more cold-tolerant subtropical fruiting plants and is well suited to much of North Florida. Established plants can tolerate considerable cold, although severe freezes can cause plant damage and temperatures below approximately 28°F can damage developing fruit. A well-drained location with good sunlight is recommended for the best fruit production.

Pollination Recommendation:
Because pineapple guava plants may vary in their ability to self-pollinate, we recommend planting two different plants when fruit production is important. Cross-pollination can significantly improve fruit set and yield.
