Hosui Asian Pear is known for producing large, round fruit with attractive golden-brown to bronze-russet skin. The creamy-white flesh is exceptionally juicy, crisp, fine-textured, and pleasantly sweet with low acidity.
Unlike European pears that are normally picked firm and softened indoors, Hosui Asian pears are harvested ripe and ready to eat directly from the tree. Their crisp, refreshing texture makes them excellent for fresh eating, fruit trays, salads, desserts, and preserves.
Hosui is a vigorous Asian pear variety that can be grown in the Florida Panhandle where sufficient winter chill is received. However, it is more vulnerable to fire blight than many Southern hybrid pears, so good air circulation and careful fertilization are especially important.

Pollination Information
Hosui Asian Pear should be planted near a different compatible Asian pear variety for dependable fruit production. Asian pears may produce limited fruit by themselves, but planting two compatible varieties generally produces a larger and more consistent crop.

• Chojuro Asian Pear
UGA specifically lists Shinko and Chojuro as pollination partners for Hosui. Another Asian pear may provide pollen if its bloom period overlaps, but Shinko and Chojuro are the most clearly documented choices.
A generic Sand Pear should not automatically be advertised as a definite Hosui pollinator unless its cultivar and flowering period are known.
North Florida Growing Note
Hosui’s approximately 300–400-hour chill requirement may fit cooler areas of North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. However, Hosui is not included in UF/IFAS’s current table of pear cultivars recommended for Florida, and UGA lists Asian pears such as Hosui for trial planting because fire blight can be a concern in the humid Southeast.
Plant Hosui in full sun with well-drained soil and plenty of room for air circulation. Avoid low, poorly drained locations and areas where cold air settles.
Do not overfertilize with nitrogen. Excessive nitrogen encourages fast, tender growth that is more vulnerable to fire blight. Prune only as needed to maintain an open structure and remove diseased or damaged growth.
Hosui Asian pears ripen on the tree and should be harvested when the skin has changed from greenish brown to a warm golden-bronze color and the fruit tastes sweet. Asian pears do not need to soften indoors like European pears. Handle the fruit gently because its skin bruises easily.
