Paulk Muscadine is a self-fertile variety that produces exceptionally large, round, dark purple to nearly black fruit. Its impressive berry size, good flavor, and dependable production make it an excellent choice for fresh eating, home gardens, U-pick farms, and local fresh-fruit markets.
Paulk was developed by the University of Georgia muscadine breeding program. It combines the large fruit size normally associated with female muscadines with the convenience and dependable pollination of a self-fertile vine.
Paulk is well suited to the warm, humid growing conditions of North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and the Gulf Coast.
Pollination Information
Paulk is self-fertile. One Paulk vine can produce fruit without another muscadine variety planted nearby.
Because it produces functional pollen, Paulk can also pollinate female muscadine varieties, including:
• Scuppernong
• Jumbo
• Scarlett
• Fry
Fruit color does not affect pollination. A dark-fruited self-fertile muscadine can pollinate bronze, red, pink, purple, or black female varieties when their flowering periods overlap.

Fruit and Harvest Note
Paulk is one of the largest self-fertile muscadines available. Its fruit is similar in size and appearance to Supreme, but Paulk’s self-fertile flowers provide more consistent pollination and more uniform berry size.
The berries have long stems that make them easier to grasp during harvest. This can help reduce squeezing, tearing, and splitting when the fruit is picked carefully.
For the best flavor, avoid allowing the vine to carry an excessive fruit load. Proper annual pruning helps maintain a good balance between fruit production, berry size, and sweetness.
North Florida Growing Note
Plant Paulk in full sun on slightly elevated, well-drained ground. Muscadines do not perform well in low areas that remain saturated after heavy rain.
Provide a sturdy, permanent trellis and train the vine carefully during its first few growing seasons. Avoid allowing a young vine to carry a heavy crop before its trunk and permanent arms are fully established.
Mature vines should be pruned annually while dormant to maintain fruit production and control excessive growth. In North Florida, major muscadine pruning is generally completed during winter before vigorous spring growth begins.
