Ninebark Physocarpus opulifolius is an upright, spreading, deciduous, shrub. Growing 5-10’ tall, it is noted for its exfoliating bark which peels in strips to reveal several layers of reddish to light brown inner bark–hence the common name of ninebark. This plant is also known as Common Ninebark and is a native plant that offers a lot of year round interest. It grows in a full and mounded shape and in Spring it has clusters of flowers that resemble Spirea. The flowers turn into reddish pink capsules that turn brown in Winter. The leaves turn a beautiful yellow in Fall and the bark peels in strips that reveal reddish to light brown inner bark. These are great to use as a hedge too!
