Narrowleaf Crabapple, botanically known as Malus angustifolia, is a deciduous native tree also called Southern Crabapple, Wild Crabapple, or Narrowleaf Crab. It is native to Florida and much of the southeastern United States, making it an excellent choice for native landscapes, wildlife plantings, pollinator gardens, woodland borders, and naturalized areas.

In spring, Narrowleaf Crabapple produces clusters of fragrant pink flowers that provide an important early-season source of pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, yellow-green crabapples that generally mature from late summer into fall.

The fruit is approximately ¾ to 1 inch in diameter and has a tart, sour flavor. Although it is not normally eaten fresh like a standard apple, it may be used for jelly, preserves, cider, and other recipes. Birds, deer, squirrels, rabbits, opossums, and other wildlife also enjoy the fruit.

Narrowleaf Crabapple develops an open, spreading, rounded crown and may grow as a small tree or large shrub. It performs best in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Plant it where fallen fruit will not create a problem along sidewalks, driveways, or heavily used lawn areas.

For the most dependable fruit production, plant another genetically different Narrowleaf Crabapple, Southern Crabapple, or compatible early-blooming crabapple nearby. A single tree may produce some fruit, but cross-pollination generally improves fruit set.

Narrowleaf Crabapple is Malus angustifolia, while Chickasaw Plum is Prunus angustifolia. They are two separate native fruiting trees.
