Buy Monticello Mayhaw Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
Monticello Mayhaw is a North Florida regional selection well suited to the Florida Panhandle and the broader North Florida/South Georgia growing area. Mayhaws are traditional Southern fruit trees prized for their beautiful spring flowers and small red fruit used to make the famous clear, ruby-colored mayhaw jelly.
The Monticello selection originated from the Monticello, Florida area, where native mayhaws have long grown and produced fruit. This makes it an especially interesting choice for gardeners looking for a fruit tree with strong regional ties to North Florida.
In late winter to early spring, mayhaw trees produce clusters of attractive white flowers that provide an early food source for bees and other pollinators. The flowers are followed by small, apple-like fruit that ripens in spring. The red fruit has a tart flavor and is most commonly cooked into jelly, syrup, preserves, juice, and other traditional Southern recipes.
Mayhaws naturally grow in low, moist areas, but they do not have to be planted in a swamp. They can grow very well in ordinary landscape and orchard settings as long as adequate moisture is provided during dry periods.
Plant Details:
North Florida Growing Note:
Monticello Mayhaw is especially appealing for North Florida because it is a regional selection originating from the Monticello, Florida area. Mayhaws are native and well adapted to the humid Southeast and can tolerate moisture conditions that many traditional fruit trees cannot.
Although mayhaws are often associated with wetlands and low areas, University of Georgia Extension notes that they can also grow successfully on higher ground when adequate irrigation is provided. Planting on slightly higher ground may actually help protect early flowers from cold air that settles into low areas during spring freezes.
Pollination Recommendation:
For customers who want the best fruit production, we recommend planting two genetically different mayhaw cultivars within pollinating distance of each other.
A single mayhaw may produce fruit, but another compatible cultivar blooming at approximately the same time can improve pollination and fruit set. Bees and other insects are important pollinators of mayhaw flowers.
Fruit Use Note:
Mayhaw fruit is traditionally prized for jelly, syrup, preserves, and juice. The tart fruit contains natural pectin and produces the beautiful color and distinctive flavor associated with traditional Southern mayhaw jelly.
