Flame Seedless Grape Vine

Flame Seedless Grape is a popular red table grape known for its sweet flavor, crisp texture, and attractive seedless fruit. The round, bright red to deep red grapes grow in generous clusters and are excellent for eating fresh, adding to fruit salads, freezing for snacks, and using in desserts.

This early-ripening bunch grape is self-fertile, so one vine can produce fruit without another grape variety nearby. The vigorous vine requires full sun, good air circulation, a sturdy trellis, and annual dormant pruning.

Flame Seedless was developed for warm, dry grape-growing regions. Although the vine may grow in North Florida, our high humidity, frequent summer rainfall, fungal disease pressure, and risk of Pierce’s disease can make long-term production difficult. It should be offered as an experimental grape rather than one of the most dependable bunch grapes for our area.

Important Pruning Note

Flame Seedless should normally be spur pruned. Train the vine to permanent horizontal cordons and shorten the previous season’s fruiting growth to approximately two-bud spurs during winter dormancy.

This is different from Thompson Seedless and Concord, which are generally cane-pruned varieties. Correct pruning helps control vigorous growth, improves air circulation, and maintains productive fruiting wood.

Some cluster and shoot thinning may be helpful because Flame Seedless can produce heavy crops. Reducing overcrowded growth can improve sunlight exposure, berry quality, and air circulation around the fruit.

North Florida Growing Note

Flame Seedless is not considered one of the most dependable bunch grapes for North Florida. Its USDA hardiness range describes its ability to tolerate winter temperatures, but it does not measure resistance to Florida’s summer heat, humidity, diseases, or Pierce’s disease.

The vine may grow and produce for a period in North Florida, but results can be inconsistent. Flame Seedless is not included among the Pierce’s disease-resistant bunch grapes recommended by UF/IFAS for dependable Florida production.

Plant it in full sun with excellent air circulation and well-drained soil. Avoid low, damp planting areas and overhead watering. Drip irrigation is preferred. Regular monitoring and preventive fungal-disease management may be necessary.

Customers seeking the most dependable grapes for North Florida should consider muscadines or Florida-adapted, Pierce’s disease-resistant bunch grape varieties.
