Eastern hophornbeam Ostrya virginiana:

Full sun to Shade tolerant tree is a slow grower- gets 50 feet tall and 25-30 foot wide. Forms an oval or round canopy. Fall coloration is yellow. Small nutlets are used by birds and mammals in the winter. Bark peels and is orange or grayish brown. Grows in several soil types and has a high drought tolerance. It has no aerosol salt tolerance and poor soil salt tolerance.

Uses: tree is tolerant to poor soil conditions found in urban areas. Wood is strong, hard, and durable and was once used for sleigh runners, fence posts, fuel, and tool handles. Inner wood was used to treat toothaches, sore muscles and coughs by Native Americans.

Fun Facts: Great climbing tree. Also known as “Ironwood”. The fruit loosely resemble the hops used to make beer. Short lived tree with shallow roots. Resistant to compaction, deer, drought, fire, insects pests, storm damage, and wind.
