– Sold OutCowart Muscadine is a dependable, self-fertile variety that produces medium-sized, dark purple to nearly black fruit with a sweet, traditional muscadine flavor. It is especially useful for home gardens because it produces fruit without requiring a second variety and can also provide pollen for nearby female muscadine vines.
Cowart is well adapted to the heat and humidity of North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and the Gulf Coast. Its vigorous growth and usefulness as a pollinator make it a practical addition to a backyard muscadine planting.
Pollination Information
Cowart is self-fertile and does not require another muscadine variety to produce fruit.
Because it has self-fertile flowers, Cowart can also help pollinate female muscadine varieties planted nearby. Good female varieties to pair with Cowart include:

• Scuppernong
• Jumbo
• Scarlett
Cowart has historically been considered an especially useful pollinator for Fry.
Fruit color does not affect pollination. A dark-fruited self-fertile muscadine can pollinate a bronze, red, pink, or black female variety as long as their flowering periods overlap.

Fruit Quality Note
Cowart fruit is sweet and flavorful, but fully ripe berries may have a wet stem scar and do not store or ship as well as some newer varieties. It is especially suitable for home gardens, local harvest, processing, and use as a pollinator.
North Florida Growing Note
Plant Cowart in a sunny location with well-drained soil and a strong permanent trellis. Avoid low areas where water remains after heavy rainfall.
Muscadines produce fruit on new shoots growing from the previous season’s growth. Annual dormant pruning helps control the vine and encourages continued fruit production. In North Florida, pruning is generally completed during February or early March.
