Coratina Olive is a traditional Italian olive variety originating in the Puglia region of southern Italy. It is especially prized for producing high-quality olive oil with a distinctive robust, fruity, slightly bitter and peppery flavor.

Coratina produces medium-sized olives with a high oil content and is primarily grown as an oil-producing variety. The oil is particularly valued for its naturally high concentration of polyphenols and excellent stability.

The tree develops attractive evergreen gray-green foliage and a vigorous growth habit. Coratina adapts to a variety of soils but performs best in full sun with excellent drainage. Once established, olive trees are relatively drought tolerant and should never be planted where water remains around the root system.

Coratina is a late-ripening olive compared with many other varieties. Harvest timing can vary considerably depending on climate, weather and whether the fruit is being harvested earlier for a stronger oil or allowed to ripen further.

Coratina requires cross-pollination for dependable fruit production. Plant a different compatible olive variety nearby that flowers at approximately the same time. Frantoio is one cultivar commonly associated with Coratina for cross-pollination. Do not depend on a second Coratina tree to provide adequate pollination.

Plant Details:

  • Plant Type: Evergreen fruit and oil-producing tree
  • Botanical Name: Olea europaea ‘Coratina’
  • Mature Size: Commonly approximately 20–25 feet tall and wide; older unpruned trees may become considerably larger
  • Sun: Full sun
  • USDA Zones: Best considered for Zones 9–10; may be grown cautiously in protected Zone 8 locations
  • Chill Hours: No dependable cultivar-specific chill-hour requirement is established; winter chilling is important for proper olive flowering
  • Bloom Time: Spring
  • Harvest Time: Late fall into early winter, depending on climate and desired fruit maturity
  • Fruit: Medium-sized olives valued for their high oil content
  • Fruit Use: Primarily olive oil production; olives must be properly cured before eating
  • Oil Characteristics: Robust, fruity, bitter and peppery; known for high polyphenol content
  • Pollination: Cross-pollination required for dependable fruit production
  • Pollinator: Plant another compatible olive cultivar with overlapping bloom; Arbequina is a good variety to consider
  • Growth Habit: Moderately vigorous to vigorous evergreen tree
  • Cold Tolerance: Less cold tolerant than Arbequina. Protect when temperatures are expected to reach approximately 20°F or below. Significant foliage and twig damage becomes increasingly possible in the upper teens.
  • Drought Tolerance: Good once established
  • Soil: Requires well-drained soil; avoid wet or poorly drained planting sites
  • Water: Water regularly while establishing, then allow the soil to drain between watering
  • Landscape Uses: Home orchard, olive oil production, edible landscape, specimen tree and Mediterranean-style gardens

North Florida Growing Note: Coratina should be considered a marginal or trial olive for colder portions of North Florida. Although it can tolerate heat and performs well in warm climates, it is less cold tolerant than varieties such as Arbequina. Plant Coratina in a warm, protected location with full sun and excellent drainage. Young trees should be protected during freezes, and protection is recommended whenever temperatures are expected to fall to approximately 20°F or below. Customers in colder Zone 8 locations should understand that severe freezes may cause significant damage.

North Florida's heavy rainfall and humidity can also create challenges for olives. Avoid low areas and locations where water collects after rain. Raised planting areas or naturally sandy, well-drained soils are preferred.
