Salavatski Pomegranate is an excellent cold-hardy pomegranate variety valued for its large fruit, attractive red arils, sweet-tart flavor, and dependable production. It is one of the better-known Russian-type pomegranates and is especially appealing to gardeners who want a pomegranate with greater cold tolerance than many traditional varieties.

The large fruit contains reddish arils with a pleasant fruity, sweet-tart juice. The seeds are generally described as semi-soft, making Salavatski useful for both fresh eating and juicing. Clemson Extension specifically lists Salavatski among the Russian pomegranate cultivars with high cold tolerance and describes it as having large fruit, light-red arils, fruity sweet-tart juice, and semi-soft seeds.

Salavatski also makes an attractive landscape plant. Bright orange-red flowers appear against glossy green foliage, followed by colorful fruit later in the growing season. It naturally develops as a multi-stemmed shrub but can be trained and pruned into a small fruit tree.

North Florida Growing Note: Salavatski is a particularly interesting pomegranate for North Florida. UF/IFAS lists Salavatski as a popular home-garden cultivar in Florida, and UF/IFAS Extension notes that it bears at an early age and has good cold tolerance. Pomegranates have been grown successfully in the Florida Panhandle for many decades.
