Double G Mayhaw is an improved Southern mayhaw cultivar valued for its dark-red fruit, strawberry-colored pulp, early fruit production, heavy yields, and naturally attractive tree form. It is an excellent specialty fruit tree for North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and other areas of the humid Southeast.

Double G was developed by mayhaw breeder Billy Craft from a cross between Texas Star and Royal Star. It is known for beginning fruit production at a relatively young age and for naturally developing a well-formed tree with relatively little corrective pruning.

The tree produces clusters of white flowers in early spring followed by dark-red fruit with red to strawberry-colored flesh. The fruit has the traditional tart mayhaw flavor prized for jelly, syrup, preserves, juice, sauces, wine, and other Southern recipes.

North Florida Growing Note:

Double G Mayhaw is a very good choice for North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. Mayhaws are adapted to the warm, humid Southeast and tolerate wetter soil conditions better than many traditional fruit trees.

Although wild mayhaws are commonly associated with wetlands, streams, and low areas, Double G does not need to be planted in swampy conditions. For home orchards and landscapes, a site with full sun, adequate moisture, reasonable drainage, and good air circulation is ideal.

Double G is an early-blooming mayhaw, so flowers may occasionally be affected by a late freeze. When possible, avoid low areas where cold air settles and frost is more likely to occur.

Pollination Recommendation:

For the best fruit production, we recommend planting Double G with at least one genetically different mayhaw cultivar that blooms during the same general period.

Mayhaws may have some self-fertility, but cross-pollination generally improves fruit set and dependable production. Bees and other insects are important mayhaw pollinators.

Good Pollinator Partners:

Other early- to mid-season blooming mayhaws can provide cross-pollination.

Red Champ may overlap with Double G in many locations, but bloom timing varies with weather and location. Other genetically different mayhaw cultivars with overlapping early-spring bloom may also be used.

When space allows, planting two or more different mayhaw cultivars is preferable for dependable fruit production.

Disease Note:

Double G should not be described as fire-blight resistant. Published Extension information rates it as susceptible or only fairly resistant, and disease severity can vary considerably from year to year.

Good air circulation, proper sanitation, avoiding excessive nitrogen, and removing infected wood during appropriate dormant pruning can help reduce disease problems.

Fruit Use Note:

Double G produces attractive dark-red fruit with colored pulp that is excellent for traditional Southern mayhaw jelly.

The fruit can also be used for syrup, juice, preserves, sauces, wine, and other cooked recipes.
