Concord Grape Vine

Advanced Nursery Growers

$80.00

Concord Grape is a classic American bunch grape known for its rich, sweet-tart flavor and deep blue-purple fruit. Its unmistakable old-fashioned grape flavor makes it especially popular for homemade juice, jelly, jam, preserves, and desserts.

The medium to large grapes grow in attractive clusters and have seeds. Concord is a slip-skin grape, meaning the skin separates easily from the soft, juicy pulp. Although the fruit can be eaten fresh, its seeds, thicker skin, and tender pulp make it better known as a processing grape than a modern table grape.

Concord is self-fertile, so one vine can produce fruit without another grape variety nearby. The vigorous vine requires full sun, a sturdy trellis, good air circulation, and annual dormant pruning.

Pruning Note

Concord grapes produce fruit on shoots that grow from the previous season’s wood. Annual dormant pruning is necessary to remove excess growth, renew fruiting wood, improve air circulation, and maintain good fruit size.

Concord is commonly trained on a high-wire cordon, Geneva Double Curtain, or similar trellis system suited to vigorous American grapes. Avoid allowing the vine to become a dense, unpruned mass because overcrowding reduces airflow and can increase disease problems.

North Florida Growing Note

Concord is not considered one of the most dependable bunch grapes for North Florida. Although its USDA Zone 5–9 hardiness range includes our area, hardiness zones primarily measure winter cold tolerance and do not account for Florida’s summer heat, humidity, disease pressure, or Pierce’s disease.

The vine may grow and produce for a period in North Florida, but results can be inconsistent. Concord is not included on the UF/IFAS list of bunch grapes recommended for dependable Florida production.

Plant Concord in full sun with excellent air circulation and well-drained soil. Avoid low, damp areas and overhead watering. Regular monitoring and a preventive disease-management program may be necessary.

Customers wanting a more dependable bunch grape for North Florida should consider a Florida-adapted, Pierce’s disease-resistant variety.
