Chinese Chestnut is a beautiful, long-lived shade and nut tree valued for its spreading canopy, glossy green foliage, and sweet, edible chestnuts. It is widely planted for home orchards, wildlife plantings, food plots, farms, and large landscapes.

Chinese Chestnut trees have better natural resistance to chestnut blight than American Chestnuts, although they are not completely immune. For dependable nut production, plant at least two genetically different Chinese Chestnut trees within pollinating distance of one another.

North Florida Growing Note:

Chinese Chestnut can grow and produce nuts in the Florida Panhandle when planted in full sun and well-drained soil. Choose an elevated location where water does not collect around the roots. Chestnut trees do not tolerate wet feet, heavy waterlogged soil, or prolonged flooding.

North Florida’s sandy soil may benefit from added organic matter and a light layer of mulch around the root zone. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk. Water young trees consistently during their first few growing seasons, especially during hot or dry weather.

Plant at least two genetically different Chinese Chestnut trees near one another for cross-pollination. Two trees grown from different seeds are genetically different and can usually pollinate each other. Avoid relying on two grafted trees of the same named variety because genetically identical trees will not provide effective cross-pollination.

Chestnuts fall inside extremely sharp, spiny burs. Plant trees away from sidewalks, play areas, driveways, livestock gathering areas, and locations where people frequently walk barefoot.
