Buy Hybrid Chestnut Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Hybrid Chestnuts are productive deciduous nut trees created by crossing two or more chestnut species. Depending on their parentage, hybrids may combine the American Chestnut’s upright growth and high-quality nuts with the Chinese Chestnut’s adaptability and improved resistance to chestnut blight.
Hybrid Chestnuts make excellent additions to home orchards, nut groves, farms, food plots, wildlife plantings, and large landscapes. Plant at least two genetically different, compatible chestnut trees with overlapping bloom times for dependable pollination and nut production.
Plant Details:
North Florida Growing Note:
Hybrid Chestnuts can grow in the Florida Panhandle, but performance may vary considerably because different hybrids have different parentage and chilling requirements. Select hybrids adapted to warm climates and lower-chill growing regions whenever that information is available.
Plant Hybrid Chestnuts in full sun on an elevated, well-drained site. Chestnuts do not tolerate wet feet, standing water, heavy waterlogged soil, or prolonged flooding. North Florida’s sandy soil may benefit from organic matter and a light layer of mulch over the root zone. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk.
Water young trees consistently during their first few growing seasons, especially during hot or dry weather. Once established, chestnuts are moderately drought tolerant, but consistent moisture supports better growth and nut development.
For dependable nut production, plant at least two genetically different Hybrid Chestnuts or another compatible chestnut species with an overlapping bloom period. Two grafted trees of the same named variety are genetically identical and will not provide effective cross-pollination for each other.
Chestnut burs are extremely sharp and spiny. Plant trees away from sidewalks, driveways, patios, playgrounds, livestock gathering areas, and other places where people or animals frequently walk.
