The Chemlali Olive Tree is a vigorous evergreen olive variety originating in Tunisia. It develops attractive silvery-green foliage, an upright form and a full, dense canopy that adds Mediterranean beauty to the landscape. Chemlali produces small olives that ripen from green to dark purple or nearly black. The fruit is traditionally grown for making olive oil, although the olives may also be cured for eating. Fresh olives should not be eaten directly from the tree because they are naturally very bitter and require proper curing. Chemlali is adapted to hot, dry conditions and can become drought tolerant once established. In North Florida, it should be planted in full sun and exceptionally well-drained soil. It is a good specialty choice for edible landscaping, ornamental planting or for growers interested in experimenting with home olive production. Plant Details
Fruit and UsesChemlali is primarily considered an oil-producing olive. Its small fruit can produce a mild, fruity olive oil that may have slightly bitter or peppery notes when harvested early. The olives can also be cured for home use, but they must be properly processed before eating. Olives picked directly from the tree are naturally bitter and are not suitable for eating fresh. PollinationChemlali is often described as self-compatible and may produce fruit when planted alone. However, olive pollination can vary with climate and growing conditions. For the best opportunity for fruit production, plant a second, genetically different olive variety nearby that flowers at approximately the same time. Olive pollen is carried by the wind rather than by insects. North Florida Growing NoteChemlali comes from the warm, dry olive-growing regions of Tunisia and has not been extensively tested as a fruit-producing variety in Florida. It may grow well as an attractive evergreen landscape tree in North Florida, but consistent fruit production will depend on winter chill, spring temperatures, rainfall during flowering and pollination. Plant Chemlali in a sunny, elevated location where water drains quickly. Avoid low areas, heavy clay and locations where water remains after rain. Raised planting areas may be beneficial in wetter parts of the Florida Panhandle. Protect young trees during hard freezes. Established olive trees are more cold tolerant, but flowers and developing fruit may still be damaged by late cold weather. Planting and CareChoose a location receiving at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day. Do not plant the tree deeper than it was growing in its container. Water regularly during the first growing season, allowing the soil to begin drying between waterings. Once established, olive trees tolerate dry periods better than consistently wet soil. Fertilize lightly. Excessive nitrogen can produce heavy leafy growth while reducing flowering and fruit production. Prune as needed to maintain the desired height, improve air circulation and create an open canopy. Avoid excessive pruning because olives flower and produce fruit on growth made during the previous season.
