Catawba Grape is a vigorous American bunch grape known for its copper-red to purplish-red fruit and distinctive sweet, rich grape flavor. The juicy, seeded grapes have a traditional slip skin and are especially popular for homemade jelly, juice, preserves, wine, and old-fashioned recipes. They may also be enjoyed fresh when allowed to ripen fully on the vine.
Catawba is a late-season grape that ripens later than Concord. It is self-fertile, so one vine can produce fruit without another grape variety planted nearby. The vigorous vine requires full sun, good air circulation, sturdy support, and annual dormant pruning.
Plant Details
Catawba prefers full sun and deep, well-drained soil. Its fruit is traditionally valued for juice, jelly, blush or rosé-style wine, and sparkling wine.
Pruning Note
Catawba produces fruit on shoots that grow from the previous season’s wood. Annual dormant pruning is necessary to renew fruiting wood, control vigorous growth, and keep sunlight and air moving through the vine.
American bunch grapes are commonly trained on a high-wire cordon or similar trellis system. Depending on the selected training system, the vine may be maintained with short fruiting spurs or fruiting canes. Remove most of the previous year’s excess growth each winter rather than allowing the vine to become a dense, tangled mass.
North Florida Growing Note
Catawba is more tolerant of humid Eastern growing conditions than many European grapes, but it is not considered one of the most dependable bunch grapes for Florida. It is not included among the Pierce’s disease-resistant bunch grape cultivars recommended by UF/IFAS for Florida production.
The vine may grow and produce in North Florida, but long-term results can be inconsistent because of Pierce’s disease and fungal disease pressure. Catawba is particularly susceptible to black rot and downy mildew.
Plant it in full sun with excellent air circulation and well-drained soil. Avoid low, damp locations and overhead irrigation. Regular disease monitoring and preventive care may be required during warm, rainy weather.
Customers wanting the most dependable grapes for North Florida should consider muscadines or Florida-developed, Pierce’s disease-resistant bunch grapes.
