Carlos Muscadine Vine

Advanced Nursery Growers

$16.00

Carlos Muscadine is a productive, self-fertile bronze variety with a traditional Southern muscadine flavor similar to Scuppernong. It is one of the best-known bronze muscadines for making juice, jelly, preserves, and homemade wine.

Carlos is a dependable choice for home gardens, farms, vineyards, and edible landscapes throughout North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and the Gulf Coast. The vigorous vine produces heavy crops of medium-sized bronze fruit and performs best in full sun on a strong permanent trellis.

Pollination Information

Carlos is self-fertile. One Carlos vine can produce fruit without another muscadine variety nearby.

Carlos can also provide pollen for female muscadine varieties, including:

• Scuppernong
• Jumbo
• Scarlett
• Fry

Fruit color does not affect pollination. A bronze self-fertile muscadine such as Carlos can pollinate bronze, red, pink, purple, or black female varieties.

Carlos should be described as self-fertile, not as a male muscadine.

Fruit and Harvest Note

Carlos is especially valuable as a processing muscadine. The fruit is smaller than many newer fresh-market varieties, but the vine is highly productive and produces dependable crops for juice, jelly, preserves, and wine.

The berries generally ripen evenly and commonly separate from the stem with a relatively dry scar, making harvesting and processing easier.

North Florida Growing Note

Plant Carlos in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Avoid low areas where water remains after heavy rain.

Carlos can produce heavy crops, so it needs a strong, permanent trellis. Allow approximately 20 feet of trellis space for each mature vine.

Annual dormant pruning helps keep the vine manageable and encourages productive new growth. In North Florida, muscadines are generally pruned during February or early March before vigorous spring growth begins.

Good air circulation and annual removal of old fruit stems can also help reduce fruit-rot problems.
