Buy Native Black Walnut Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

The Native Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a magnificent deciduous shade and nut tree native to eastern North America, with its natural range extending into northwestern Florida. Valued for its edible nuts, wildlife benefits, impressive mature size, and beautiful dark hardwood, Black Walnut is an excellent choice for large properties, native landscapes, food forests, wildlife plantings, and reforestation projects.

Black Walnut produces large, round green-husked nuts containing richly flavored edible kernels. The nuts are prized for baking, desserts, candies, and fresh eating, although the extremely hard shells require more effort to crack than many other walnuts.

This is a long-lived native tree that develops into an impressive shade tree with a broad canopy. Because of its eventual size and extensive root system, Black Walnut should be planted where it has plenty of room to mature.

  • Water: Regular moisture during establishment; established trees develop good drought tolerance

  • Wildlife Value: Nuts are an important food source for squirrels and other wildlife

Pollination:

Black Walnut trees produce both male and female flowers on the same tree and are technically self-fertile.

However, the male flowers may release pollen at a different time than the female flowers on the same tree are receptive.

For this reason, we recommend planting at least two genetically different Black Walnut seedlings or selections within pollinating distance of one another when dependable nut production is the goal.

Cross-pollination generally provides a better opportunity for good nut set.

Nut Production:

Black Walnuts produce round nuts surrounded by thick green husks that mature in fall.

Inside the husk is an extremely hard, deeply ridged shell containing the edible walnut kernel.

The kernels have a rich, distinctive flavor and can be used for:

  • Fresh eating
  • Cakes and cookies
  • Breads
  • Pies and desserts
  • Candies
  • Ice cream
  • Specialty recipes

Black Walnut seedlings can take several years before beginning to produce nuts, and substantial crops may take considerably longer. Individual seedlings vary in how quickly they begin bearing.

Black Walnut is best considered a long-term investment that can provide edible nuts, shade, wildlife habitat, and landscape value for many years.

North Florida Growing Note:

Native Black Walnut is an excellent choice for North Florida and the Florida Panhandle, including the DeFuniak Springs area.

The natural range of Black Walnut extends into northwestern Florida, and UF/IFAS notes that Black Walnut will grow and fruit in North Florida.

For the best growth, choose a location with full sun and deep, fertile, well-drained soil.

Although Black Walnut tolerates a range of soil conditions once established, growth and nut production are generally best where the soil remains moderately moist without staying continuously waterlogged.

Because Black Walnut develops a deep root system and eventually becomes a very large tree, choose its permanent location carefully.

Important Juglone Planting Note:

Black Walnut naturally produces a substance called juglone in its roots, leaves, stems, and nut hulls.

Juglone can inhibit the growth of certain sensitive plants growing close to the tree.

Plants that may be sensitive to Black Walnut include:

  • Azaleas
  • Blueberries
  • Apples
  • Tomatoes
  • Some other fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants

Because of this natural characteristic, Black Walnut is best planted away from vegetable gardens, blueberry plantings, and sensitive ornamental beds.

This does not mean nothing can grow around a Black Walnut. Many native plants, grasses, shrubs, and trees tolerate growing near walnuts very well. Proper plant selection is important when landscaping around mature Black Walnut trees.

Growing Tips:

Plant Black Walnut in a spacious location where the mature canopy and root system will not interfere with buildings, pavement, power lines, or other valuable landscape plants.

Full sun encourages the strongest growth and best nut production.

Keep young trees regularly watered during establishment.

Mulch around the root zone to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch several inches away from the trunk.

Black Walnut develops a strong taproot when young, so trees are best planted in their permanent location while relatively young rather than repeatedly transplanted.

Prune young trees as necessary to develop a strong central leader and good branch structure.

Wildlife & Native Landscape Value:

Black Walnut is an important native wildlife tree.

The nuts provide food for squirrels and other mammals, while the foliage supports several native insects and butterfly and moth species.

Its large canopy provides shade, shelter, and habitat as the tree matures.

For customers developing a native woodland, wildlife habitat, food forest, or reforestation planting, Black Walnut can provide both ecological and long-term landscape value.

Wood & Timber Value:

Black Walnut is also one of North America's most highly valued native hardwood trees.

Its dark, attractive wood has traditionally been prized for fine furniture, cabinetry, veneer, woodworking, and specialty lumber.

Trees grown for timber require many years to mature, but Black Walnut can be an excellent addition to long-term woodland and reforestation projects.
