Sycamore Tree

America sycamore Platanus occidentalis A very fast growing tree grows as tall as 75 ft.  This makes a very nice shade tree. The largest native hardwood tree in North America, Sycamore is easily identified by its large leaves and beautiful white under-bark which appears as the tree ages and the outer bark exfoliates. I usually see these in floodplains or along rivers and stream, however, they are quite adaptable to drier conditions once established. I have a volunteer in my rain-only trial gardens near the nursery. Sycamores are not for small lawns, however, due to their large size, up to 100’ or more and almost equal spread. They’re not for everybody, but they make quite beautiful specimens in the right landscape!!
