Natchez is an early-ripening, thornless blackberry developed by the University of Arkansas. It produces very large, elongated blackberries with excellent flavor, attractive glossy color, and small seeds. Its early harvest, high yield potential, and low chilling requirement make Natchez one of the better blackberry varieties for North Florida and the Gulf Coast.

Natchez is a floricane-fruiting blackberry, which means berries are produced on second-year canes. The vigorous canes benefit from a trellis to support the heavy fruit crop and make harvesting easier.

North Florida Growing Note: Natchez is one of the better-adapted Arkansas blackberry varieties for North Florida. Its approximately 300-hour chilling requirement provides more reliable production after mild winters than higher-chill varieties such as Apache, Navaho, and Triple Crown.

Pruning Note: Natchez produces berries on second-year canes called floricanes. After harvest, remove the canes that produced fruit at ground level. Retain the healthy new primocanes because they will produce the following year’s crop. Tip-prune new canes during summer to encourage branching and additional fruiting wood.

Crop Management Note: Natchez can produce very heavy crops. Proper pruning and trellising help prevent overcropping, broken canes, and a decline in plant vigor.
