North Florida Growing Note

Ruby Red grapefruit can be grown in North Florida, but it requires more winter protection than Satsuma mandarins, kumquats, and many sweet oranges.

Plant the tree in a sunny, well-drained location protected from strong north winds. The south or southeast side of a home or other structure may provide additional warmth during cold weather. Avoid low areas where cold air settles.

Because Ruby Red fruit normally ripens during winter and spring, freezing temperatures may damage the fruit before it reaches its best flavor and color. Protect young trees during freezes and provide additional protection for fruit-bearing trees when prolonged freezing temperatures are expected.
