Salt-Tolerant Plants for North Florida & the Gulf Coast
Landscaping near the coast can be challenging because salt spray, sandy soil, wind, heat, and periods of drought can damage many common plants. This collection features plants known to handle coastal conditions better than less tolerant varieties.
These plants are good choices for landscapes throughout North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, and nearby Gulf Coast areas. They may work well around coastal homes, pool areas, open landscapes, and properties exposed to salty air or wind.
Salt tolerance can vary depending on how close the property is to the water and how much direct salt spray the plants receive. Even salt-tolerant plants benefit from proper planting, regular watering while becoming established, and occasional rinsing with fresh water after heavy salt exposure.
