Gulf Beauty, officially named ‘Gulfbeauty,’ is an early-ripening, low-chill plum developed by the University of Florida. It produces attractive, medium-sized plums with dark reddish-purple skin and firm yellow flesh with a slight green tint.

The flesh is sweet, mildly acidic, and flavorful, while the skin provides the pleasant tartness typical of Japanese plums. Gulf Beauty is the earliest-ripening plum in the University of Florida Gulf series, making it an excellent choice for an early Florida plum harvest.

North Florida Growing Note: Gulf Beauty was developed for Florida’s mild winters and is well suited to North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and other warm Gulf Coast areas. Its low chilling requirement makes it much more dependable locally than high-chill northern plum varieties.

Pollination Note: Gulf Beauty will not reliably produce fruit by itself. Plant it near another Gulf-series plum that blooms at the same time. Gulf Blaze and Gulf Rose are excellent pollinator partners. A suitable pollinator should generally be planted within approximately 50 feet for dependable bee-assisted cross-pollination.

Fruit-Thinning Note: Gulf Beauty can set very heavy crops. Thin excess fruit when the young plums are small to improve fruit size and help prevent overloaded or broken branches.

Disease Note: Gulf Beauty has very good resistance to bacterial canker and moderate resistance to plum leaf scald, making it a stronger choice for Florida than many older Japanese plum varieties.
