Buy Bald Cypress trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

Bald Cypress is a majestic native tree known for its soft, feathery foliage, attractive reddish-brown bark, strong pyramidal form, and exceptional tolerance of wet soil. Although it resembles an evergreen, Bald Cypress is a deciduous conifer that turns a warm coppery-orange color before dropping its needles in fall.

This long-lived tree is naturally found along rivers, swamps, ponds, and floodplains throughout Florida and the southeastern United States. It performs beautifully in wet areas but can also adapt to ordinary landscape soil when watered during establishment.

Plant Details:

  • Plant Type: Native deciduous conifer
  • Botanical Name: Taxodium distichum
  • Mature Size: Commonly 50–70 feet tall and 20–30 feet wide in landscapes; older trees can grow considerably larger
  • Growth Habit: Upright and pyramidal when young, becoming broader with age
  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under favorable conditions
  • Sun: Full sun; tolerates light partial shade
  • USDA Zones: 4–10
  • Foliage: Soft, feathery green needles that turn coppery-orange or reddish-brown in fall
  • Flowers: Inconspicuous male and female flowers on the same tree
  • Cones: Round, woody cones mature in fall
  • Soil: Adapts to moist, wet, or periodically flooded soil as well as reasonably well-drained landscape soil
  • Water: Prefers consistent moisture but becomes moderately drought tolerant once established
  • Salt Tolerance: Slightly salt tolerant
  • Wildlife Value: Provides shelter and nesting habitat; seeds are eaten by birds and small mammals
  • Landscape Uses: Pond edges, rain gardens, wetland restoration, reforestation, large lawns, parks, shade plantings, and areas with poor drainage

North Florida Growing Note: Bald Cypress is native and exceptionally well adapted to North Florida and the Gulf Coast. It tolerates heat, humidity, heavy rainfall, periodic flooding, and occasional drought once established.

Winter Appearance Note: Bald Cypress naturally drops its needles during fall and winter. A leafless tree during dormancy is not dead. Fresh green growth returns in spring.

Cypress-Knee Note: Trees growing in or near standing water may develop woody root projections called cypress knees. Knees are less likely to form in ordinary, well-drained landscape locations. Plant Bald Cypress away from sidewalks, foundations, septic systems, and areas where knees or expanding roots could become an obstruction.

Planting-Space Note: Bald Cypress becomes a very large tree and needs plenty of room to develop. Avoid planting directly beneath power lines or too close to buildings.
