Grow your own “Florida cranberry” with Roselle Hibiscus. This heat-loving plant has attractive lobed foliage and yellow flowers with dark centers. After the flowers fade, the fleshy red calyces develop and can be harvested for tea, sauces, jams, and other recipes. In North Florida, grow Roselle as a warm-season annual and plan to harvest before frost.

Plant Details

  • Plant Type: Tender tropical perennial, usually grown as a warm-season annual in North Florida

  • Botanical Name: Hibiscus sabdariffa

  • Mature Size: About 5–7 feet tall

  • Sun: Full sun

  • USDA Zones: 9–10 as a perennial; grow as an annual in colder areas

  • Chill Hours: Not applicable

  • Bloom Time: Fall, as days shorten

  • Flower: Yellow blooms with dark centers

  • Fruit: Fleshy red calyces develop after flowering; the tart calyces are harvested for culinary use

  • Pollination: Flowers are pollinated by insects; pollination helps the seed-bearing calyces develop

  • Soil/Water: Well-drained soil; water during dry periods

  • Landscape Uses: Edible gardens, kitchen gardens, and warm-season ornamental plantings

Best Pollinators

Bees and other flower-visiting insects visit Roselle’s blooms. For North Florida, plant in spring so it has a long, warm growing season before its fall flowers and calyces develop. Harvest the calyces while they are tender and plump, before they turn brown, and before frost.
