Buy Mahan Pecan Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

The Mahan Pecan is an old Southern pecan variety known for its very large, attractive nuts and rich flavor. The nuts are often impressive in size and appearance, making Mahan a variety many customers recognize. It is best suited to growers who can provide good care and disease management, especially in humid areas of the Southeast.

Plant Details:

  • Plant Type: Deciduous fruit and nut tree

  • Botanical Name: Carya illinoinensis ‘Mahan’

  • Mature Size: Approximately 60–80+ ft. tall with a broad spreading canopy

  • Sun: Full sun

  • USDA Zones: Approximately 6–9

  • Nut Size: Very large pecans

  • Kernel: Large, flavorful kernels

  • Harvest: Mid- to late-season, generally in fall

  • Pollination: Type II (protogynous)

  • Best Pollinator Partners: Plant with a compatible Type I pecan with overlapping bloom, such as Pawnee, Desirable, Cape Fear, or another suitable Type I cultivar

  • Soil: Deep, fertile, well-drained soil

  • Water: Regular moisture is important during establishment and nut development

  • Landscape Uses: Home orchards, farms, large properties, edible landscapes, wildlife plantings, and shade trees

Pollination:
Mahan is a Type II pecan, meaning the female flowers generally become receptive before pollen is released. For better nut set and production, plant it near a compatible Type I pecan with overlapping bloom.

Nut Quality:
Mahan is especially known for its very large pecans. The size and attractive appearance make it appealing for home growers, although heavy crops can sometimes result in kernels that do not fill as completely as smaller-nut varieties.

North Florida Growing Note:
Mahan can grow and produce in North Florida and the Gulf Coast, but it is considered more susceptible to pecan scab and other disease problems than many newer pecan varieties. In humid climates, good air circulation, proper spacing, sanitation, and a regular disease-management program may be needed for dependable crops.
