North Florida Growing Note

Sand Pear is well suited to North Florida landscapes, food forests, backyard orchards, farms, and edible gardens. Plant it in full sun with well-drained soil and enough room for its naturally broad canopy.

Sand pears ripen on the tree. Harvest the fruit once it has turned yellow and separates easily from the branch. Do not pick it too early because Asian pears do not continue ripening the same way European pears do after harvest.

Pick the fruit promptly once ripe. Leaving it on the tree too long can make the flesh grittier and may attract birds, squirrels, yellowjackets, and other wildlife.

Plant the tree away from sidewalks, driveways, patios, and heavily traveled areas because fallen fruit can become messy.

Sand Pear can be drought tolerant after establishment, but regular watering during dry periods helps support tree health and fruit production. Trees planted in sandy North Florida soil may need more frequent, lighter watering than trees growing in heavier soil.

Fire blight is one of the most important diseases to watch for. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer and severe pruning because both can encourage tender growth that is more vulnerable to infection.
