🌳 Sweetgum Tree (Liquidambar styraciflua)

Also known as Redgum or Sapgum, this remarkable tree can grow 80–150 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 3–5 feet. Its distinctive star-shaped leaves put on a spectacular autumn show, displaying brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. Grows in Zones 5-9.

The Sweetgum features a straight central stem and a pyramidal crown, giving it a strong, stately form in the landscape. Native to southern bottomlands, it thrives in moist, rich, alluvial soils and can even tolerate wet feet.

🌿 Commercial & Historical Uses
Sweetgum is one of the most important hardwood species—second only to oaks in production. Its lumber, often marketed as ā€œsatin-walnut,ā€ is used for:
• Veneer
• Furniture
• Interior trim
• Woodenware

Historically, pioneers extracted a fragrant gum by peeling and scraping the bark, using it for medicinal purposes and even as chewing gum. The resin of its Asian relatives is still used today in perfumes and medicines.

🐦 Wildlife Value
Female trees produce the familiar spiny, burr-like seed balls, which provide food and habitat for wildlife.

šŸ Why Plant a Sweetgum?
This species rivals nearly any tree for outstanding fall color, making it a standout for landscapes seeking height, structure, and year-round interest.
