Lane Muscadine is an early-ripening, self-fertile variety that produces attractive dark purple to nearly black fruit. Its sweet, mild flavor and unusually firm flesh make it an excellent choice for fresh eating.
The berries develop a consistent, evenly colored appearance and hold their firmness well after harvest. Lane is especially useful for gardeners who want ripe black muscadines earlier in the season.
Lane performs well in the warm, humid climate of North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and the Gulf Coast when planted in full sun with good drainage and a strong permanent trellis.
Pollination Information
Lane is self-fertile. One Lane vine can produce fruit without another muscadine variety nearby.
Because Lane has self-fertile flowers, it can also provide pollen for female muscadine varieties, including:

Fruit color does not affect pollination. A black self-fertile muscadine can pollinate bronze, red, pink, purple, or black female varieties when their bloom periods overlap.

Fruit and Harvest Note
Lane is valued for producing black muscadines earlier than most other dark-fruited varieties. The berries become uniformly dark when ripe, without noticeable red coloring around the stem.
Its firm flesh allows ripe fruit to remain on the vine longer than many traditional muscadines. Lane generally ripens more evenly than varieties that require numerous pickings.
The berries can sometimes split or tear near the stem during picking, especially when the vines receive heavy irrigation or rainfall close to harvest. Allowing the fruit to dry before picking and harvesting later in the day may help reduce splitting.
Production Note
Lane produces moderate crops. Its yield may be lower than heavier-producing varieties such as Triumph, but its early harvest, attractive black fruit, and firm texture make it a valuable variety for extending the muscadine season.
Patented Variety
Lane is protected by U.S. Plant Patent PP24,142 and is owned by the University of Georgia Research Foundation.
Propagation is prohibited without permission from the patent holder. Plants should be purchased from an authorized or licensed source.
North Florida Growing Note
Plant Lane in a sunny location where water drains quickly after heavy rainfall. Muscadines do not perform well in low areas with standing water.
Provide a strong, permanent trellis with at least 20 feet of growing space for each mature vine.
Annual dormant pruning keeps the vine manageable and encourages productive new fruiting growth. In North Florida, muscadines are generally pruned during February or early March before vigorous spring growth begins.
