Russian Mulberry is a tough, fast-growing fruit and wildlife tree known for its exceptional cold hardiness, adaptability, and abundant berry production. Also known as Tatar Mulberry, it is a hardy form of White Mulberry that has been grown in North America for generations.

Russian Mulberry produces blackberry-like fruit that may range from light-colored to pink, red, purple, or nearly black depending on the individual tree. The berries are generally sweet when fully ripe and may be eaten fresh or used for jams, jellies, juice, syrup, wine, and other recipes.

North Florida Growing Note:
Russian Mulberry is very well adapted to the temperature range of North Florida. In fact, its cold tolerance far exceeds what is normally needed in the Florida Panhandle.

The tree tolerates heat, poor soils, and periods of drought once established. Plant in full sun and well-drained soil for the best fruit production.

Russian Mulberry is a form of White Mulberry and is not a Florida native tree. Customers specifically wanting a native mulberry should choose a true Red Mulberry (Morus rubra) instead.

Important Fruit & Pollination Note:
Russian Mulberry is somewhat variable, particularly when plants are grown from seed. Individual trees can differ in fruit color, berry size, flavor, productivity, and whether they produce male, female, or both types of flowers.

If the plant is propagated from a known fruiting selection, its characteristics will be much more predictable. Seed-grown Russian Mulberries should not be sold with a guarantee of a particular fruit color or fruit quality unless the individual selection is known.

Wildlife Value:
Russian Mulberry is an excellent choice for customers planting for birds and other wildlife. The trees can produce abundant crops, and ripe berries are readily eaten by many bird species.

Planting Location Note:
Dark-fruited trees may drop berries that stain sidewalks, patios, driveways, vehicles, and other hard surfaces. Plant fruiting mulberries away from paved areas when possible.

Birds may also spread mulberry seed after eating the fruit, so unwanted seedlings can occasionally appear nearby.
