– Sold OutBuy Red Champ Mayhaw Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
Red Champ Mayhaw is an outstanding Southern mayhaw cultivar valued for its large dark-red fruit, heavy production, relatively uniform ripening, and good overall tree performance. It is an excellent choice for North Florida and the Florida Panhandle, where mayhaws are well suited to the region's climate and growing conditions.
Red Champ resulted from years of mayhaw breeding and selection and is reported as a cross between Maxine and Double G, also written Double GG. The tree produces attractive white flowers in spring followed by large, shiny dark-red fruit that generally ripens in May.
The tart, flavorful fruit is especially prized for making traditional mayhaw jelly, but it can also be used for syrup, juice, preserves, sauces, wine, and other cooked recipes.
One of Red Champ's standout characteristics is its relatively uniform ripening. A large portion of the crop may mature within a fairly short period, making harvesting easier than with mayhaw selections that ripen over an extended period.
Plant Details:
North Florida Growing Note:
Red Champ Mayhaw is a very good specialty fruit tree for North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. Mayhaws are naturally adapted to the humid Southeast and tolerate wetter soils better than many traditional fruit trees.
Although mayhaws are naturally associated with wetlands, streams, and low areas, they do not require swamp conditions to grow successfully. Red Champ can be grown on ordinary orchard or landscape sites when adequate moisture is available.
For best fruit production, choose a location with full sun, good air circulation, adequate moisture, and reasonable drainage.
Pollination Recommendation:
For reliable fruit production, we recommend planting Red Champ with at least one different mayhaw cultivar that flowers during the same general period.
Mayhaw flowers can have some self-fertility, but pollen viability may be limited, and cross-pollination generally improves fruit set and production. Bees and other insects are important mayhaw pollinators.
Good Pollinator Partners:
Good choices include Double G, Maxine, Surprise, or another genetically different mayhaw cultivar with overlapping spring bloom.
When space allows, planting two or more different mayhaw cultivars is preferable for dependable production.
Fruit Use Note:
Red Champ produces large, dark-red fruit especially well suited for traditional Southern mayhaw jelly.
Mayhaw fruit is naturally tart and is most commonly cooked or processed into jelly, syrup, juice, preserves, wine, and sauces rather than eaten fresh.
