North Florida Growing Note:

Red Maple is native to Florida and grows well in the Florida Panhandle. It is especially useful for moist locations, low areas, pond edges, drainage areas, and sites that occasionally hold water. Although it tolerates seasonal wetness, young trees should still be planted at the correct depth and watered regularly while establishing.

Red Maples grown in North Florida may display red, orange, or yellow fall color. The intensity and duration of the color depend on the individual tree, soil moisture, temperatures, and seasonal weather. Seed-grown native trees naturally vary in their fall color.

Red Maple has a broad, spreading root system, and surface roots may develop as the tree matures. Plant it away from sidewalks, driveways, septic systems, foundations, and underground utilities. Avoid planting directly beneath overhead power lines.

Apply mulch over the root zone to conserve moisture, but keep it several inches away from the trunk. Avoid adding lime unless a soil test recommends it because Red Maple generally prefers acidic soil.
