Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) is a tough, attractive Florida native evergreen that can be grown as a large shrub or trained into a beautiful small tree. Its small, dark green leaves provide year-round color, while female plants can produce brilliant red berries that add winter interest and provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife.

One of the most adaptable native hollies for Southern landscapes, Yaupon Holly tolerates heat, drought, coastal conditions, salt, and a wide variety of soils. It works well as a specimen, natural screen, hedge, wildlife planting, or small native tree.

Small white flowers appear in spring and provide nectar for bees and other pollinators. Yaupon Holly is dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are produced on separate plants. A female plant must have a compatible male Yaupon Holly nearby for good berry production.

Yaupon Holly is an excellent native choice for North Florida and the Florida Panhandle. It handles our summer heat, periods of drought, sandy soils, and coastal conditions particularly well. Plants are adaptable to both relatively dry and periodically wet sites once established.

For the heaviest berry display, plant female Yaupon Hollies where they receive plenty of sunlight and have a male Yaupon Holly growing nearby.

Yaupon Holly may naturally produce suckers from its roots. These can be left in place to create a dense natural screen or removed periodically when the plant is being maintained as a single specimen tree.
