Buy North Florida Native Elderberry Plants for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

North Florida Native Elderberry is a vigorous, fast-growing native fruiting shrub that is naturally adapted to Florida’s climate. This is an excellent choice for edible landscapes, wildlife gardens, pollinator plantings, naturalized areas, and home fruit gardens throughout the Florida Panhandle.

This deciduous shrub develops multiple stems and can form a broad, attractive thicket over time. Clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in spring and are followed by clusters of small berries that ripen from green to deep purple-black. The flowers attract pollinators, while the ripe fruit is highly attractive to birds and other wildlife.

Florida native elderberries can flower earlier than northern elderberry varieties. In Florida, flowering may begin as early as February or March, with the earliest ripe berries appearing around June. Exact timing varies with weather, location, and the individual plant.

Elderberries are commonly harvested for use in cooked or properly processed products such as syrups, jellies, preserves, juices, and other recipes. The flowers are also traditionally harvested for culinary uses.

  • Mature Size: Approximately 5–12 feet tall and 6–10 feet wide

  • Sun: Full sun to partial shade; best flowering and fruiting generally occur with good sun exposure

  • Flowers: Large clusters of creamy-white flowers that attract pollinators

  • Pollination: Many elderberries are capable of some self-pollination, but planting two genetically different elderberry plants is recommended for improved pollination and fruit production
  • Soil: Adaptable to clay, sand, and loam; performs especially well in fertile, moist soil
  • Water: Prefers consistent moisture, particularly during establishment, flowering, and fruit development; tolerates wetter soils better than many fruiting plants
  • Landscape Uses: Edible landscape, native garden, wildlife planting, pollinator garden, naturalized area, rain garden, screen, or home fruit garden

North Florida Growing Note:
This is a native Florida elderberry, making it particularly well adapted to the heat, humidity, rainfall, and winter conditions of the Florida Panhandle. Native Florida elderberry differs from European elderberry and from some elderberry cultivars developed farther north. European elderberry is generally not as well adapted to long-term growing conditions in Florida.

Pollination Recommendation:
For customers primarily interested in fruit production, we recommend planting at least two genetically different elderberry plants. Although elderberry may produce some fruit with a single plant, having another genetically different elderberry nearby can improve pollination and fruit set.

Important Fruit Use Note:
Only fully ripe berries and appropriate flower parts should be used for food preparation. Leaves, stems, roots, green berries, and other immature plant material should not be consumed. Elderberries are commonly cooked or otherwise properly processed before use.
